Pros

Macy's provides a good entry level job to get into retail and there are some opportunities for advancement to specialist or commissioned areas. The employee discounts and Macy Money are also good perks.

Cons

Although associates are expected to sell items to customers, provide outstanding customer service, and keep the department in order, pay starts at or around minimum wage and, in my experience at least, there is very little recognition for hard work where it is due. An associate has to sell a certain amount and open a certain number of credit applications to get recognized as a hard worker, whereas those who work the floor and try to do stock work are ignored for their efforts. A lot of people get away with sitting down on the job and chatting all day without the managers realizing at all.

Pros

They offer seasonal jobs and the wardrobe is professional-looking.

Cons

It's very stressful working there. When I worked during the holiday season they basically put me in a different department every day so it was really confusing. They also didn't tell me everything I needed to know before they put me out on the floor - they need a better training program.

Pros

Opportunity, networking, helps build your career, freedom to work as an individual. The environment and the people are amazing. The risk/reward aspect of my job is very enriching.

Cons

A lot of room for failure, or in other words, you take a lot of risk. I'm already in jeapordy of getting consolidated for a second time. It's possible that I'll go through 2 mergers within 2 years of graduating for college. Make sure your open for relocation. That's the nature of the beast when you work in coporate retail. Th only way to climb the corporate ladder is to be open for relocation, though.
