Don't be fooled

Pros

The core idea behind Makespace is unique and has the potential to be a successful company if taken in the right direction...

Cons

The adjacent reviews are clearly written by Mr. Sam Rosen himself, trying to supercede the real reviews behind it. Don't be fooled, this is not a place you want to work at. There are plenty of other startups in NYC where your work will be appreciated, where you won't be micromanaged, and where you can excel in an environment that helps you grow professionally alongside the company.

Pros

The opportunity MakeSpace gives our staff is limitless. We have an amazingly talented group of people tackling some of the most complex problems - literally transforming a broken industry. Each function within the business has a myriad of interesting and challenging problems to work on. It's by far the least bureaucratic firm I've worked for, where people are given the free reign to come up with creative solutions from operations to engineering. People are definitely passionate about the company, in fact 1 in 4 employees are referrals. It's a fast growing (and very fast paced) startup, and things have the ability to change constantly. Those who have the ability to adapt and focus at the goal at hand will succeed. There is very little hand holding (I balk at any reviewer who cries about micro-management unless that now means being reminded to keep the office tidy). People are expected to work in the manner that’s most conducive for them to be effective. It’s a very flat organization where regardless of title, you’ll have the opportunity to make a direct impact on the business which I’ve found to be the most rewarding aspect of working here (along with the people). If you want an extremely transparent organization where you’ll feel well informed and also have a voice (yes – the cofounders and board members will make themselves available to us) this is the type of place for you.

Cons

The company is definitely growing rapidly and experiencing some growing pains as all companies do. With that though comes the opportunity to come up with more efficient ways of doing things and to step up and carve your own path. People who cannot prioritize, focus or effectively communicate (including opening your mouth / stepping outside of your comfort zone) may struggle until they realize this is a part of our core values. The company is very goal driven, and results oriented which can be off-putting for the non competitive type (not the case in all departments though). This is not a boring 9-5 if that's what you're looking for, and you'll need some discipline to turn off because there are just so many problems to solve you will never have a moment where work is done - I think that's a positive though?

Pros

I took this job because of how impressed I was with: the concept, the people who work there (super smart/impressive) and the opportunity. The concept is amazing. This is a revolutionary idea and MakeSpace is the leader in the space with the best infrastructure of all it's competition. When breaking down other similar companies, you'll see MakeSpace is just way ahead of the game. People. This was the most attractive part of working here and so far it's lived up to everything I thought it would. The leaders of the company are extremely smart. Many of them come from great schools and/or other good companies. Working under my manager and the other managers at the company gives me confidence we're going in the right direction and will be the clear leader in this space. I also know my job is safe b/c the company is in the right hands. Opportunity. Being able to come into a company while it's so young is exciting. I look forward to the opportunity I'm going to have as I continue to prove myself and work my way up.

Cons

The office is a long commute from where I live.
