Do not work here!

Pros

The mission of helping the severe and profound population is the only pro.

Cons

Leadership needs a complete overhaul. Direct care staff are extremely underpaid and overworked, and suggestions to improve pay and working conditions are often ignored by upper management. High turnover in nearly all areas of the org. Bad leaders hide behind the mission but don't practice what they preach. Extremely toxic environment. Would not recommend this place to work at, and definitely would never trust this place with caring for a loved one. Look elsewhere, there are better long-term care and non-profits out there to work at that pay their workers what they are worth!!!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We sincerely apologize for any negative experiences you believe you may have had during your time with our organization. We value all input as it helps us identify areas for improvement. We understand that everyone's experience is unique, and we are committed to addressing concerns in a constructive and respectful manner. To address your impression of the senior management: Upper management and those in administration do have very different responsibilities and expectations than those in direct care which may not be completely visible or understood by all staff, but are nonetheless important to the organization’s operations process. However, if there is ever something of concern, Gil Fonger, our President & CEO, has an open-door policy and always encourages staff to contact him if they feel they cannot discuss concerns with their own manager. We truly wish you had reached out while still at Marklund. Again, we apologize for any disappointment you may have experienced, and we are committed to learning from this feedback, and specifically communicating again to staff to reach out to management, upper management and even the President & CEO to have issues addressed. This type of two-way communication can ultimately enhance the quality of services we provide. Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.

Pros

Cons

Short staffed at the time but that's everywhere While the pay was fairly competitive at the time it still isn't a living wage for the area

We are pleased that you found working with our residents a positive experience — they are the heart of Marklund. And noting that the culture with your coworkers was positive as well is good to hear. We do want to address the point you made about the pay. In addition to merit increases and a $1.25/hour rate increase mandated last year by the State of Illinois, we have been offering an increased pay rate to caregivers at our Marklund Philip Center which will continue through June of 2025, when the residents will be moved to our newly expanded and renovated facility in Elgin. Depending on the shift our Caregivers at Philip Center can currently make up to $23.25/hr.
