Pros

Mars is a great place to be at. The clients are some of the biggest in the world and they ask Mars to do some very interesting work. A couple of the bigger pros are that there is a great mentorship program in place and they on board new hires almost immediately. You get a lot client exposure and learn a lot abut some of the finer aspects of handling and talking with clients

Cons

A few of the downsides are that some of the workflows tend to be delayed after meetings with project managers and VPs. Yes there are long hours and it can be frustrating to start something from scratch but this isn't really Mars specific but rather a industry specific complaint

Pros

- Exposure to F200 clients; except actual on-site work can be limited - Great company for CPG industry experience; ~80-90% of projects have CPG focus - All promotions internal; if you stick around long enough, you will be promoted - (Finally) attempting to address some of the issues mentioned below - Can get a nice functional variety in projects (market analysis, growth strat, etc.)

Cons

- Best consultants leave in 1-2 years, causing mass exodus of talent - Consultant exodus leads to reactive company promotions to retain leftover talent and fill gaps by rewarding less-able consultants who stuck around long enough - Inherently faulty strategy leads to obvious failure loop: 1) All VPs promoted from within so only have CPG experience and can't sell projects in other industries; 2) Historical one client per industry model makes it harder for new VPs to sell projects to other CPG clients; 3) new VPs become glorified project managers (with greater impact of Mars' bonus cash pool) of projects sold by other VPs (this has changed recently but I am skeptical of a lasting trend); 4) This leads to smaller bonuses for rest of company (expediting exodus cycle mentioned earlier)

Pros

When comparing to other consulting companies, here are some of the benefits of Mars & Co: - Given that we do purely strategy, the work itself is very interesting and always challenging/rewarding - There is no travel "schedule" of Mon-Thurs on site. We travel only when necessary, and use the office as home base whenever possible - There is also no promotion "schedule", so if you do well, you can be promoted very quickly - Global reach allows for international travel opportunities - Relatively small company, so it is easy to get to know everyone in the office - Only serve one client per industry, so every project is a new industry - keeps things interesting and you're rarely doing the same thing over and over - Great benefits: fully paid health insurance, dental, reimbursement for Lasik, free gym membership

Cons

Mars is a one-man show, run entirely by the CEO, with very little visibility provided to anyone else (including most VPs). As a result, it is practically impossible to know what the true state of the company is or where people stand at the end of the day. Furthermore, any decisions (promotions, raises, etc) are at his sole discretion, or that of a select few, with little recourse for employees who may disagree. As with any consulting job, work-life balance is difficult. You may get lucky and be staffed on an "easy" project, but even then you are expected to make your evenings, weekends, and even planned vacations available for work. Some managers are better about this than others.
