It's All About Who You Know

Pros

No dress code, relaxed office environment, great benefits, and you work for a company that has the ability to directly change someone's life for the better. Business itself is good, and for some people, opportunity abound. To be one of those lucky few, you must know the right people. Some coworkers are very bent out of shape about this, but I think it is because they didn't realize it until it was too late for them. To me, this is the way of the world in virtually all corporate landscapes. Depending on which team you land on, you could have a really great work-life balance and rewarding career.

Cons

Disorganized management and constant reorgs for no real reason other than to avoid actually promoting people. Several coworkers have been blatantly told that raises and promotions are only given at year end or not at all, while simultaneously quietly changing the title for other employees on the same team. There is a culture of secrecy at the management and executive levels that alienates everyone else. Also, there is an expectation of 24/7 work hours, working on vacation, and other work/life balance issues. On some teams, you will end up a slave to Match with a boss who expects constant access to you at all times, working vacations, and dictates a dress code even though Match has none.

It was a great ride, but wore me down at the end

Pros

Smart, smart, people. Still have a product to believe in.

Cons

- Started valuing micromanaging over results. - It's a sweatshop and they don't care to change it. - If you stay there too long, you price yourself out of the market for finding employment anywhere else. Someone called it "the golden handcuffs". - Somewhere along the way, they stopped giving a crap about long-time people who helped get them to where they were.

Pros

- It varies with different departments, but my current management is great. They do not micromanage projects and they allow you to take ownership of what you do and how you do things while challenging you to become better. - The corporate culture is really laidback and casual. It helps greatly with morale when the culture is not so uptight. - They usually provide the tools you need to get the job done, as long the cost is reasonable.

Cons

- The cronyism here is so blatantly apparent, it doesn't even seem like they try to hide it anymore. Bottom line is, your raise percentage and chance of promotion is proportionate to how close you are to certain people in upper management. - HR only looks out for upper management (see above). When they are approached with complaints about said upper management and the current state of affairs, HR deflects the issue and takes personal offense to these complaints, instead of being unbiased and hearing out these issues and actually coming up with solutions. - The pay increase/raise/promotion system is absolutely terrible. Typically, you only get a pay increase with a position change. You could actually go a couple years without having had a bump in salary, while friends of upper management get promoted multiple times only having been at the company for a little more than a year.
