Pros

I originally was not going to write a review about Mattermark until seeing all of the recent job openings. Want to make sure anyone interviewing with Mattermark has a clear vision of the company, something most of us did not have. Mattermark hires great and talented people, although there has been a mass exodus. Just look at the amount of job openings they have and how recent they all are. I would also guess the 5 star review bellow is written by a founder.

Cons

There have been multiple rounds of layoffs, one where they went through the Account Executives and SDR's a month after hiring many of them, tapped people on the shoulder, took them into a conference room, and fired them while the rest of the sales team sat there watching and wondering who would be tapped next. The founders decided to scale up the sales team without having product market fit so they had a sales team with no product to sell. The founders do not know what they are doing, the CEO held an all hands where she told a company with very low morale that the company would not be acquired, probably couldn't raise more funding, and she was going to run the company into the ground. Terrible leadership and unprofessional. The company peaked at around 60 employees in June/July 2016, now I would be surprised if they have 20. The VP's and the founders clash and lacked communication which made the working environment very hostile, especially when they would loudly argue in the middle of the open office space. Most of the VP's have left the company.

Great Passion, Poor Leadership

Pros

Everyone at Mattermark is passionate and wants to see the company succeed. The problems the company is trying to tackle are challenging and well worth the effort. Benefits are good and it can be a fun place to work because a lot of the people make it fun.

Cons

Plagued by internal politics, turnover from employees leaving on their own accord and being terminated, poor product roadmap, and necessary hires going unhired. Management prides itself on being transparent, and is with the finances, but misleads and even lies to employees about the people-centric issues. Data team needs more support. Product team needs more support. Engineers need more support. None of these teams are given the resources they need to succeed, and the product is why users are churning. CEO sees some employees as a cost experiment and others as friends. She is often MIA.

Pros

If you are passionate about a particular area and that happens to coincide with your role, you'll have a lot of opportunity to drive things forward. However if your daily work is impacted by things outside of your role or by poor decisions from above, you basically have to grin and bear it. So it's worth considering if you have room to grow within your role.

Cons

The marketing is very strong: "we're going to use machine learning to solve the hundreds of business analysts" problem that our competitors have. That sounds great and it's a really great idea. However, the implementation of that is lagging. Simply look at the teams page to see how much the company has invested in machine learning. Go to LinkedIn and see who has joined and left. To make the idea a reality will require a huge investment in machine learning. Take a look at the team page and compare the size of the data team to the machine learning team. The company is very heavy on personal relations. On the surface, this seems fine however there is a convoluted collection of cliques. One clique is friends of the founders. It was interesting seeing them join and then get invited to management-only meetings. That doesn't happen now -- it's probably been moved to private chat channels. Communication is overall extremely poor. At first, the Friday meetings seem great however eventually you realize that it is just a "roll out the employees and force them to listen to what should be a 5 minute email". The only transparency is around burn rate and sales. It's great to have but it's not enough and the forced nature of the meeting is silly. Chronic issues like the office temperature regularly shooting up to 80 degrees go unaddressed for months if not years. As an employee, it was a very odd experience. It's as if the people leading this have no clue about basic operation needs. On the engineering side, you'll find ownership extends to code reviews. Work between team members is poorly coordinated. The product team likes doing big reveals and not involving the engineering team beyond implementation. If you care about driving things forward rapidly in a way that grows values, you're going to step on toes and the inexperience of the management team will bite you. And that really sums it all up. Strong and sometimes vicious "in" group, lots of group thinking, apparently a fair amount of communication out band, strong marketing, weak implementation and strained relations between the employees. If you can handle all of that, the pay and benefits are great -- options a little weak.
