Pros

Managers are willing to listen, that does not mean they will necessarily respond the way you would like. Employees at McCarthy act like a family for the most part. If you need to take time off or come in late to handle personal matters here and there, the team is always supportive as long as communication is good.

Cons

Promotions seem to be awarded based on your manager's liking of you, not necessarily how you have excelled or improved the company's success. You have to be in the right group to get promoted. The expectations/requirements to receive a promotion are not consistent from manager to manager. Pay is not competitive with other companies in the area for the same positions. Individuals with construction management degrees make the same starting pay that individuals with technical/engineering degrees do. McCarthy is getting top notch individuals with technical degrees at a reduced cost to the company. Finally, McCarthy preaches "work/life success" because "it is not a balance;" however, the expectations of direct management are significantly higher than the expectations that executives preach. All of these factors lead to burn out really quickly.

Pros

Decent retirement benefits thanks to ESOP

Cons

Complaints of harassment, bullying and discrimination are not taken seriously. Whether reported to HR, ethics hotline or the CLO himself. In cases I was aware of, the perpetrators were not addressed, instead the victims were managed out and/or bought off. The womens initiative is more about teaching women to act like men and "fix" themselves rather than addressing the actual problem. As late as 2020 management refused to use gender neutral language despite the growing trend in both the legal system and with competitors and its own JV partners. They got defensive and said it "sounded weird". Even the mascot "the dude" was written off saying new hires weren't bothered by it... which misunderstands power dynamics. Women were often referred to as "girls" even in top management meetings. Top male leaders interrupted female leaders incessantly which all attributes to the overall environment of disrespect.

Pros

McCarthy is a large company with solid benefits and competitive compensation packages.

Cons

The company lacks quality leadership and there is very little accountability within the company. The management level does not facilitate professional development and communication needs improvement. The demographics at the company are starkly uniform, particularly so at the executive level; very little diversity and inclusion. Furthermore, very few efforts are made to change the status quo. Most of the efforts surrounding diversity and inclusion are strictly performative.
