Pros

The location of McGill is excellent, in the center of very cosmopolitan Montreal. The international reputation of McGill was my motivation for working there. Your experience will be mostly what you make of it. For bright people, I think it is an environment where they can excel.

Cons

The major downsides of McGill is the aging infrastructure around the main campus and the notorious red tape associated with administrative issues. The quality of your experience at McGill is mostly related to your direct management. So the advice for graduate students is to do some research and to chose your advisor carefully.

Pros

You have the opportunity to help some of the best and brightest students learn and navigate the university structure. Within my department, there are a lot of new projects being developed, which makes it a very exciting time to be working there. Montreal is an amazing city and McGill's location in the centre of downtown makes it a convenient place to work as well.

Cons

McGill is an enormous bureaucracy with very few people willing to go out of their way to share information or provide assistance to people outside of their departments. Because of this, if you are looking for information from another department, you can get bounced from person to person, or even department to department without ever finding a satisfactory answer. The upper management is not very supportive of lower-level employees and you can definitely make more money at Concordia doing the exact same job.

Pros

Lots of time off (Summer Fridays, 12 stats, 4 weeks vacation). If you get in the right department it is a nice life. Campus is beautiful, right downtown. Students are fun, multi-cultural and this adds a great dimension to the campus. Lots of your peers are great people.

Cons

Too many layers, HR department is not qualified as they are simply people who have been at McGill a long time and worked their way up. Too many departments/faculties are chaired by academics who have no idea of how to "run a business" or manage people. Faculty usually live in their research world.
