A once formidable empire

Pros

There is an incredible amount of talent within the organization. Excellent facilities for employees to take advantage of. A strong marketing focus gives McKinstry a competitive advantage in the market place. The company continues to set the pace for what other mechanical contractors do in the Pacific Northwest.

Cons

What was once a wonderful place that allowed and encouraged creativity and collaborative efforts, flipped when the economy crashed. Departments began to step on each other chasing revenue for their individual profit centers. While they preach work life balance, you are expected to put in 60 hour weeks at a minimum or you aren't working hard enough (at least in my department). The energy services division drives the direction of the company for better or worse. The department I was part of cleaned house due to the manager feeling threatened by what he perceived as loyalty to the previous manager rather than accepting that he was extremely difficult to work for. A lot of good talent was pushed out the door for political reasons.

Pros

A lot of the people there are nice, and helpful. The benefits are good and comparable to other similar companies.

Cons

Very stressful and oppressive atmosphere. Pay is much lower than at other competing companies. Some groups struggle with incompetent managers. Good work is not always appreciated, it really depends who your manager or supervisor is.

Pros

A lot of genuinely good people work there. Other than that, not much.

Cons

So much big talk that never gets backed up. Collaboration, people first, trusted partnerships - none of those things actually exist. They are amazing goals to have, but if you don't put it into practice they're just words. Anyone who has been there 5-10+ years has fully drank the kool-aid and buys into the "family" atmosphere, everyone needs to be in the office all the time, etc. But in reality, this company has grown so much that they don't know how to keep a culture that they supposedly once had. Don't expect to get support from your manager like you'd expect from a company that touts being "people first". You'll get brushed off, zero empathy, and in the end you look like a complainer just for seeking support.
