Pros

You are able to run your own business. You are exposed to all sides of the business (distribution, manufacturing, sales, negotiations, inventory management, marketing, strategy, new product development, etc.). People are hard working and very competitive. Change is a constant. The owners care about the business but also about their employees.

Cons

Some managers can micro-manage you to death. Training is hard to come by. More market data would be helpful. There are so many silos the sales reps find it difficult to know who to go to with questions. Need more engineers for product development.

Pros

+ pay if you start at a good level + bonuses + job security + lots of different areas to work, opportunities + gives young people chance at management + you will have a lot of responsibilities so it can make you more marketable later... because they will make you wear 10x more hats than someone else in the industry

Cons

- decision-making gridlock is the norm - culture of escalation... people will go above you if they don't like your answer... - undermining runs rampant - poor morale because everyone is frustrated - too many fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants decision-making - no sales or strategic planning... everything is sell for today - do now, think later leading to a lot of inefficiencies - Marketing Dept. is a mess which is a symptom of the company being a mess... Marketing is reflective of how the company sees itself and how they want to be perceived to customers/potential customers - You'll hear "well that's Medline" meaning this place is crazy because of all of the above

Pros

Gained a lot of responsibility early in my career so was able to learn a tremendous amount. Employees at the working level were very close so you're able to develop comradery and close friendships. Job security was also a plus.

Cons

Upper management uses fear tactics and disrespect to motivate employees- there is also no transparency from leadership. While I worked there from 2005-2011 there was absolutely no diversity within upper management. Also there was zero flexibility in work schedule.
