Pros

My career has had many incarnations with a similar thread of reaching out to and helping others. I want to feel good about myself at the end of the day. I want to know that in some way that I made a difference. For this very reason, I have worked for Melissa & Doug for 9 years. I represent a company that goes above and beyond to make amazing toys that make me proud. I'm also encouraged to go above and beyond for every customer I assist rather than sticking to a scripted protocol. Everyday something happens to touch my heart. I think of the many times that I am on the phone helping a Mom whose child has autism pick out toys to help with therapy. I think of an instance of working with a homecare nurse who uses our toys in her literacy program. I smile when I think of sharing in the joy of a storeowner who calls me to share the news of her long awaited pregnancy. Because I am able to interact with so many customers from so many walks of life that have become dear friends, my job is so much more than toys!

Cons

Nothing comes to mind, I am very happy here

Pros

They make a great product. Melissa personally puts her heart and soul into the making of the products. Well thought out, safe, reasonably priced toys. Some great people work there(all trying to figure a way out), discounts on toys...product really is great. They pay well, if you have the proof to back it up. In other words they will ask to see your W2's from preceding years to get a baseline for your pay. You don't take your work home with you. No one gets fired unless you really want to be...they will work with you to get the most out of you. That being said, they will work you until the cows come home. There is this illusion of a friendly atmosphere but in reality it is a very stressful atmosphere. Never have I worked in an environment that was so manipulative and personally destructive...oh wait I'm sorry this is to be the "Pros."

Cons

Where to begin. Manipulation is the name of the game. They manipulate both the employee and the client. The interview process was bizarre and it takes days. You are constantly monitored. I certainly understand a good work ethic, but you are accountable for every second of the day. I was once told that I had taken 35min for lunch three days in a row, not the allowed 30, but 35....they will measure your time on the phone, in between calls, how long you were on a individual call...did that call make money...they will listen to your calls...they will instant message you about the call you are on (they call it training). They will critique everything you do you will get called out in the daily morning meeting. They will tell you one minute that you are helping people that do not know how to run their business to be more profitable and then have you manipulate them into buying more or keeping something that the customer didn't really want. Some managers, not all, are little weasels that must have had a rough trip through HS, others were nice guys, some are two faced. Then there is the child like antics that go on...It's like Jr. High, foul language, loud outburst, incredibly loud music, so called tier 1 veterans acting like 16 y/o idiots on a daily basis. I never saw so much back stabbing as I did there...everyone one talks about everyone behind their backs. I cold go on, but I think the picture has been painted.

Pros

Health benefits (although not very good). Once in a while there is a party. Coworkers are nice and the office atmosphere is casual.

Cons

LONG hours, high stress, shady practices, no or barely any yearly increases in pay, no 401k match, bad management. No growth opportunities. Expect to be there at least two full days for your "interview" doing real work unpaid (if you don't make it that long then don't expect a call back offering you a job)
