Pros

Because of the variety of projects and customer engagements, there is strong exposure to other companies and organizations for networking potential. There is limited ability to network individually, but when opportunities present, there is good leverage toward positions outside of Mercer. Client relationships are sometimes strained so there might be limited opportunities to network positively within the client base. However, often there are stakeholders that are interested in connecting. The key is to represent the company well in public settings so that you are a trusted advisor and viewed as a differentiating factor in why the client selects Mercer over competitors.

Cons

Lack of work-life balance; very limited promotion ability; lack of recognition of significant individual achievements

Pros

There are few boudaries at Mercer as far as career development at least in IPS. There is a lot of great talent at Mercer.

Cons

This firm has a real problem with innovation. They need a few more trailblazers. Many managers are afraid to be the ones that rock the boat and lead change. Be cafeful on the manager that you come in under. Some managers are just trying to lay low and people under them never get anywhere. Don't let them lead you to believe that a Senior Associate has any authority. You don't really earn respect unless you make Principal so if you have 10 years or more experience, negotiate a Principal grade upon hire because depending on the manager, it may take you years to reach Principal status. And there are lots of Principals...many of which don't deserve the title so don't let them act like Principal is a big deal. There are sales people that are hired in as Principals.

Pros

Experts in the field, intellectual capital everywhere, best of the best and bring solid solutions to their clients. Mercer is respected in the employee benefits community. Mercer allows you to work in client teams and as an individual professional bringing your experience and expertise to the team.

Cons

Work/Life balance is mentioned but not practiced. Meeting the client's needs are more important than the employee's "balance" needs.
