Pros

From an IT person's perspective, Mercury has a lot to offer. * Family Friendly - like working at a family owned company and yet is publicly traded with 5,000 employees * Leading edge technology - easy to grow your technical skills as long as you have ambition * Good pay as long as you work hard and contribute * Best place to work in the country - Orange County, CA * Strong IT leadership who listen and minimize politics * Financially strong company with profit sharing bonus * Holiday bonus equal to two weeks salary - not a turkey or ham like other companies

Cons

As many 50+ year old companies, Mercury has some very long term employees (20+ yrs) who's only work experience is at Mercury. This is both good and bad. Good because they have a lot of experience over their tenure at Mercury but bad because they lack real world work experience in which many have a tendency to resist change. I can not speak for other divisions other than Information Technology (IT) at Mercury - but I have seen some leadership changes in Claims and Customer Service which I hope will lead to better leadership in those areas. There are strong rumors within Claims that they have a lot of staff, especially in Material Damage, which are working less than a full day in the field on claims because they have a light workload. IT Systems over the last 10 years has dramatically improved and brought Mercury into the 21st century but there is much more work to do to compete in this very low margin, competitive auto/home insurance industry. Much of this success in IT Systems is due to an outstanding team of highly skilled IT professionals which I have the pleasure of working with each and every day. Human Capital (aka HR Dept) has not been as strong as I have experienced in past companies. I have not seen much from the new HC Dept except a lot of re-branding since they elevated that position from Director level to VP level but they sure have gotten top heavy. No company is perfect and there is always room for improvement - but I feel the senior executives have Mercury's employees and shareholders best intentions in mind.

Pros

I learned a lot about insurance working at Mercury the last 3 years, it is a great place to START your career in insurance. (Not a great place to continue your career) It is best to get some experience in here and then keep on moving.

Cons

They aren't competitive when it comes to pay and the training is not very good.
