Pros

I've been at many hospitals, and the culture in MercyOne Des Moines is very good. The hospital cares for patients who are unable to pay, and administration maintains respect and optimism in the workplace. I have been pleasantly surprised at how the hospital has responded to the challenges brought on by the pandemic.

Cons

The hospital is not immune to the general challenges faced in healthcare. Understaffing is a particular concern, but administration is candid about this and is finding creative solutions. I think this is a systemic concern across the US; so I do not feel justified blaming management for this, but is disheartening to see nurses taking on increasing patient loads.

Pros

Decently competitive pay when starting

Cons

Responsibilities being added to your plate nearly daily, with no update in job description. Inaccurate job description, resulting in lower pay. Unfair wages. Do not feel listened to. Do not feel valued.
