Pros

Honestly, there are no pros to working here.

Cons

They hire people for billing positions who have absolutely no experience, and they DO NOT provide training other than basic training of how to use their computer systems. They hire supervisors who are wildly unqualified and ignore proof from staff that they are making extremely costly mistakes. Mercy purports to have wonderful values, etc., and they make a big show of this at orientation for new employees, but unfortunately that is the last time you will ever see or hear anything about them ever again. In actuality, none of Mercy staff or management actually LIVE these values. Mandatory annual training about speaking up if you see fraud or unethical behavior; however, if you actually speak up, your concerns will be swept under the rug and YOU will end up being the one disciplined and/or bullied by coworkers for being a 'snitch.' Pay is okay to begin with, but they do not give raises - cost of living or otherwise. Benefits are okay, but every year they cut back on benefits and increase employee cost. PTO policy is minimal and very difficult to schedule as they are routinely short-staffed because of so many people leaving due to terrible working conditions and toxic corporate culture. Management does not look at the 'big picture' and that is why Mercy has lost money hand over fist for almost 10 years. They have billing write off $14 million in uncollected billings, and then once everyone has dropped everything to do this 'special project', they realize what they did and then everyone has to drop everything again for another 'special project' - re-entering all of the written off balances. Then they realize that most really were NOT collectable, so they (you see where this is going) make everyone drop everything to write them off again. They have now lost a RIDICULOUS amount of $ in overhead and manpower because they failed to think through their decisions before putting them into action. They have employees making $18-$25 per hour spending HOURS and costing overhead in faxing, mailing records, etc., to attempt to collect $2 from old claim that were paid incorrectly by the insurance carrier. Of the $2 unpaid balance, the insurance then only pays approx. $0.70. Mediocrity is championed at Mercy. If you point out concerns and/or ways to improve, you will be shouted down because, "that's not how we do things." There are far better health systems in the Des Moines metro area where you will actually be treated fairly, paid well, given raises and good benefits, and will not go home at night feeling like you've been duped by your employer.
