Pros

Pay is good compared to industry No lay-offs Resources to learn about assay development Medical Benefits are good

Cons

Please read the other reviews and take them into consideration. Almost all the reviews are accurate, however the positive ones place a "spin" to make things that are negatives seem like positives. If there is a con like "the color of this place is dreary" or "HR is having trouble keeping up" or even "Going through growing pains" you can be sure that review is written by someone invested in hiring you. Time off is frowned upon here, the culture is to seem like you are constantly working. There is no collaboration because ideas are not encouraged. Employees are discouraged from leaving their cubicle or office to talk with others, and required to badge in and badge out for the day. If you happen to miss a day of exactly 9 hours or more, you will be called out (regardless of your total work hours for the week). Micromanagement is rampant and part of the culture here. In addition to the CEO controlling every monetary action (even if previously approved by finance and himself) everything an employee does is reported back to middle management as a metric. This is then funneled to upper management, and you are dealt with accordingly. There is no autonomy at MSD and no room for creativity. You are a robot that is to do only what it is programmed to do.

Pros

-Schedule flexibility (once you have 2 years of experience) -Job stability

Cons

-Little to no opportunities for career growth or movement -High turnover and poor training infrastructure -Overworked middle management that will not stand up for their subordinates -Upper management that is completely disconnected and unconcerned with their employees During my time at MSD, I encountered overworked and under-trained middle management that would actively work to keep staff under their thumb. Despite messages from HR saying that there are, "Plenty of opportunities to advance within the company," there is no room for growth built into the company structure. Additionally, the upper management actively works against their employees who try to explore other options within the company (hence the high turnover). Every coworker I encountered on a daily basis was actively trying to leave the company, whether they had been just employed or were a veteran of several years. Employee morale is incredibly low and management does nothing to address the problems inherent in their infrastructure (overworking, inefficient planning, outdated software, and useless meetings). Any suggestions to improve the company from within are met with negativity and bureaucratic nonsense (all decisions within the company must be approved by a single owner). This is a bad place to work, and during my 7 years with MSD, things only seemed to get worse.

MSD: Masochists’ and Sadists’ Disneyworld

Pros

Occasionally, the water fountain works. If you arrive early enough, you can watch as the roaches run under counters and away from the light. Excellent for masochists, or freshly graduated students looking for reasons to improve.

Cons

Uneven pay scale with little relevance to skill, education, or experience. Job titles and descriptions mean nothing. Even HR admits it. Extremely poor management at a personal level, interdepartmental level, and Chief-level. No communication to employees from CEO except a single out of touch Christmas speech. (For those wondering, no. He does not make eye contact.) No career path and few opportunities to improve skills or learn new ones.
