Pros
Benefits and PTO are decent, but not incredible; newer office space/supplies, some coworkers are cool.
Cons
Metromile has the habit of over promising to employees. I worked here for 2.5 years and saw very few people get promoted into a more advanced role in the Tempe office. After 2.5 years I realized I would likely not see any opportunity to grow within 6-12 months and decided to leave. When I was interviewing, there was a lot of preaching about coming opportunities, so I foolishly accepted a job. Don’t be fooled when interviewing here. Majority of those who have been promoted were either in the right place at the right time, or were favored my management. Additionally, management is frequently on vacation, at a hair appointment, at a child’s sporting practice/game/event, etc and is out of the office since the reap the benefit of unlimited PTO that is offered to MGMT. Hourly employees are often over worked, overwhelmed, and stressed since the call volume is often through the roof yet another manager is off to Mexico for a long weekend. Getting help or having time to work on anything other than the daily duties can be impossible, so ultimately employees end up being unqualified or too inexperienced to move into another role, regardless of their personal efforts to obtain experience. In my 2.5 years I saw more than one person from an outside insurance company get hired (including Progressive, State Farm, and Liberty Mutual) end up leaving because of the poor structure, micromanagement, call volume, etc. I would recommend looking elsewhere for employment if you are currently in the insurance industry or looking to break in to the industry. Seldom do people last more than a year when working in Tempe/AZ office. Pay for SR Customer Service Advocates is $19 and some change per hour (about $40k a year) and any raise that is given is based on performance and is done once a year in the month of July. The raise offered is up to 3%. This means you may get enough of a raise to cover the cost of inflation depending on your performance— however, I did know of people who got less than 3% or even received 0%. There is no 401k match, so you are completely on your own when saving for retirement. The company has been preaching for at least 4+ years that a match would be “soon” or that it “relied on the company becoming profitable”. Profitability at Metromile is a mere fantasy and it becomes more obvious since turn over grows more and more. Between late 2018 and early 2019, 3 “Chief Officers” have left (legal, marketing, and customer service), 2 directors have been let go, multiple managers have been laid off, let go, or left on their own terms. While turn over at the individual contributor level can be expected in a call center environment, so many people leaving from MGMT and the C-suite seems to imply the company is not doing well. (Especially since many who have left on their own terms are in the same role at a different company—including at least 2 of the 3 Chief Officers ). Ultimately, Metromile promises a lot but delivers very little. Anyone I know who has left Metromile does not regret their decision in doing so, nor do they miss this deplorable company and workplace. I would avoid Metromile like the plague that it is.
