Pros

1. You get to telecommute. 2. Your work schedule allows you to have a life outside your job. 3. You are free to respectfully speak your mind without any repercussions.

Cons

1. There is a huge discrepancy between salaries on the applications and infrastructure sides. Miami-Dade County ITD is one of the only IT shops where IT personnel in infrastructure actually make a lot more than those in applications. 2. IT titles do not make any sense at ITD, which is probably why software developers in the county make around 15% less than their counterparts in infrastructure. Titles for individuals in infrastructure contain words like "programmer" in them, while the duties carried out by these individuals do not entail any programming whatsoever. These titles were once held by true programmers, and were hijacked at some point by individuals on the infrastructure side of IT. 3. Salaries for software developers do not coincide with those in the private sector. You will make about $40k less in Miami-Dade County as a senior software developer than you would in the private sector. On the other hand, you will make between $20-$40k more in the county working in infrastructure than you would in the private sector.
