Good people, good connections to be made, great learning opportunities, good benefits including educational assistance to employees and their families, good salaries.

Cons

Poor dental and vision coverage, unions protect some people to keep their jobs that should not, expensive parking and not easily accessible.

Pros

1) Teaches you to be patient 2) You have job security 3) Improves your presentation skills and helps to learn how to sound/look/pretend smart :) 4) Most people are rewarded with some job after you complete your degree.

Cons

1) Poor management of department to aid students to graduate. You have to figure out all your own. 2) Most faculty does not have funding. You may have to compromise your field of interest and choose a different one instead. 3) Duration to get a PhD is 6 yrs or more . I have seen people quitting even after 5 yrs without getting a PhD 4) There is no administrative body to monitor how adviser treat his/her research graduate students and a lot of them treat badly.
