Pros

Michigan state has a very large and beautiful campus. It has a welcoming environment. People are generally very nice here. Michigan state has a lot of highly ranked academic programs, such as education, supply chain, nuclear physics. The management of the university is very efficient and effective. Good benefits, job security. Michigan State has very good basketball and football programs. So if you enjoy sports you will be very happy here. The cost of living at East Lansing is low. You can also have a lot of fun being in a college town.

Cons

Budget problem like most of the public universities.

Pros

Good work life balance, good benefits, job security. The campus is a beautiful place especially in summer. People are kind of buffered from economic downturns. It's also great if you want to go back to school at MSU, since MSU will cover the cost of education for you and your kids.

Cons

If you are not faculty, you are always a second class citizen. Of course faculty have big egos even though their skills don't count for jack in real world operations. Since the staff is unionized, there is no incentive for working harder, so the bright people leave sooner or later. And since the staff is unionized, it is pretty hard to get rid of people you would like to get rid of. Much greater emphasis is placed on faculty development than staff development.

Pros

Great place, nice scene of the great campus, Graduate RA has parking permits in the university and paid not bad compared with other universities. Overall this is a good place to work and learn anyway and most of RA are also PhD or master students of the university. Overall the town environment is good and is very friendly to international students as well. The department director gives a lot of communication with the students and they are doing a good job to help you in all aspects. The research is interesting and fun and a lot of projects are being done here.

Cons

The payment is not that high and most of the time, there are a lot to be done as a RA. One needs to work very hard to have the job done and some times it is very competitive to remain on the position as RA positions are not always available, which depends on the funds of the prof. The economy of Michigan is bad, which might affect the school's budget. This might be the biggest concern. Some professors are very nice to work with and others may be very push to let you work a long time even in the weekends and evening.
