Pros

Grad school costs are covered, but that's about it. It's pretty cheap to live in Houghton, so costs will stay down. The area is beautiful.

Cons

Students usually have very little motivation and are just trying to get a piece of paper to get a job.

Pros

1. less distraction: remote location ensures less reasons to waste time! 2. above average undergraduate student quality and teaching: strong emphasis is placed on training and preparing undergraduates for focused industry jobs 3. active lifestyle: despite severe winters, there are plenty of opportunities for year-round outdoor activities

Cons

1. poor talent recognition mechanisms: instead of focusing on number of publication, there should be more focus on quality of publication, there should be special emphasis on recognition among peers 2. below average graduate student quality: bar for admission should be raised across each department and within the departments 3. remote location: commuting is a big problem due to weather and cost, lack of opportunities for souse's job and cultural exposure
