Pros

Get exposed to lot's of different projects. Learn a lot and need to adapt fast so it can be a good challenge, at times. Good for giving all employees stock options, benefits/401k match are good.

Cons

Very slow at promotions. Can work a very long time before getting moved up a level. Management not afraid to ask you come in weekends and there is no compensation for over time if a salaried employee. Tied to DRAM which is losing money so even if your department is making money you may not get a raise because company has company wide freeze on pay adjustments and bonuses too. Very hard to transfer internally: you may have to quit to even get to move to a different position within the company. Old Boys' network takes care of mid managers and their buddies, ignores good employees who go on not getting recognition they deserve as they are not in a certain "click"

Pros

- Pay is competitive (especially for those living in Boise where the cost of living is lower). - Vacation time is competitive. - Some (a minority) of the Sr leaders are very strong and are working throughout their leadership team to drive an effort to enable Micron to be successful in the future. - Work/life balance is "hit or miss" - some groups @ 5pm the office is empty. Others you can see full till 7pm.

Cons

- Majority of Sr leaders are still too connected with Micron's past DRAM (commodity) mindset and don't have what it takes to move the company forward as a leader with a broader memory portfolio. There's a wide gap between the Executive team (setting direction/strategy) and lower level management/employees (who want to help move the company forward). Middle managers are not empowered or lack the experience to know how to make changes. All they know is DRAM (commodity) and were promoted based on this. As a result you get an "inbred" mentality with little room for change. - When working in Boise, there are no other Semiconductor employment options, and Micron treats you accordingly. They have very few competitive employee retention policies and HR is almost non-existent. Some examples: - Managers preventing employees from moving to other "better" job openings within Micron for 3 months to 6 months, or even outright refusal. (if this was a policy in the bay area all "capable" people would leave the company to go somewhere else rather than being held captive). This is especially hard when you are hired in as a masters/PhD into an "entry level" position and find an opportunity that will allow you to grow, but cannot move and may lose the position. - No process for "dismissing" employees. A manager can decide they want you out without any documentation/justification. This leads to "personal vendettas" being acted on which creates an environment of fear for those left behind. One of the other reviewers on this site described the environment as "draconian"...very fitting. - The company is losing money which reinforces the "entrenchment" mindset I described above (going back to the "commodity" world). It's not clear they will ever transform themselves into more than what they were.

Pros

- time off is generous, especially for shift engineering - working a 3/4 day work week makes it easy to take a "week" off and have 10-11 days in a row. You earn one day of vacation each month, one day for each holiday, plus additional day if you work a holiday - you will have more time off than you can use - shift process engineer work is not that difficult - hardly need a BS in Eng to do this, especially with the tasks you will actually do in the fab - lots of OJT provided and some formal class instruction, they teach you everything you need to know as many practices are unique to the company.

Cons

- long hours and nights - shift process engineers work alternating 3 and 4 day work weeks, but rotate to night shift every 2-4 months, and work 12 hour shifts - long days, long nights. The step up from here, first shift engineering, works about 50-60 hrs/week M-F only days AND are expected to be on call 24x7 for manufacturing issues.. have to carry a pager and be available to contact.. tough to ever leave town, difficult work/life balance here - feel like you're married to Micron. - work is done 24/7/365 - Entry level position as shift engineer is dull at times - no real engineering work done, really just fighting fires and doing mundane tasks all day - extra projects with 1st shift are encouraged but the only time is coming in for overtime (salaried=no extra pay) - At least in Manassas, shift engineers are expected to perform at a higher level yet are looked down on by 1st shift.. many decisions are deferred to 1st shift as shift eng doesn't have the tools/knowledge to make higher level decisions without fear of reprocussions from 1st shift/management
