Pros

I have been contracting with Mindful Therapy Group since August 2015. This is an working environment for individual clinicians looking to maintain a great deal of control in their business model and policies. MTG is a service provider, which means that contracting with them is not an employer/employee relationship. If you are interested in being an employee, this will not be a good fit. I've loved being able to create my policies for my clients, maintain the style of psychotherapy which works best for me, and experience support as opposed to imposing ideas from my colleagues. This means I am able to create my schedule, charge fees at my discretion, see clients weekly, set private pay rates, and many other freedoms. The program we use to document and bill is managed by MTG, making it possible to work from anywhere I have an internet connection. I enjoy beautiful, well maintained office space which require little maintenance on my part. The most valuable part of contracting with MTG is the administrative staff. They are expertly trained, greet my clients with care and a personal touch, and assist with scheduling, billing, among many other tasks. I can not stress how much it means to know that my clients are treated with respect and care before and after our sessions. Overall the management team is consistently looking to advance, care for, and address any number of issues. This has resulted in a billing department of one growing to over three people since I began. Consultation opportunities, both paid and free, are available and growing within the practice. I have collaborated with colleagues in outside projects, worked closely with prescribers in the practice with whom I share clients, and built many friendships within the community. Since I completed graduate school outside WA, it was very important for me to build a community of colleagues here whom I feel confident referring clients. I enjoy the flexibility of owning my own practice, as well as the freedom to build another side of my practice outside of MTG. I've explored possibilities such as running groups, workshops, and do consulting in other areas of interest on a regular basis. The beauty of MTG is a bustling referral base which helps to grow practices very quickly, so I haven't felt pressured to build my consulting more quickly than I would like. I've felt supported and encouraged by MTG every step of the way. When I first began, I appreciated the detailed outline of requirements that accompany owning your own business. This made the steps much easier to tackle. Working with an accountant, I've also gained a great deal of knowledge around the more challenging aspects, such as paying taxes on gross income and finding health insurance.

Cons

There really have not been any drawbacks thus far. A great deal of this has to do with embracing the model of service provider and business owner. People who struggle to maintain independence in this way encounter more issues at MTG. That being said, there are a lot of systems in place to help people succeed, if you're willing to put in the work. Inevitably there have been bumps in the road (taxes, finding a working healthcare plan). None thus far are insurmountable and with the support of an excellent administrative team and owners, I've felt guided and free to ask questions. I enjoy helping new clinicians, collaborating with colleagues, and am constantly finding new and better ways to strengthen my business.

Challenging and Rewarding Place to Work

Pros

Mindful Therapy Group has been one of the most challenging and rewarding places I've worked. The work of being in the administration of the group requires a lot of learning and on-the-job training in order to understand insurance processing and client relations. The learning curve is steep in the beginning, but the management understands this and is very supportive in the process. The company is very committed to employee growth, and is focused on building up their own and promoting from within. They value hard work and commitment, and reward that openly. The management is open to feedback, and in fact ask for it. They welcome conflict as a means of building relationships, and encourage employees to be open and transparent with them. Because of that, relationships between management and the administrative team are strong and friendly. Social events are held multiple times a year to build relationships and are always a great time. Perhaps the most valuable part of my experience working on this team is the focus on self-compassion as a method of problem solving. Unlike other places where "the customer is always right" and employees often leave conflict feeling disrespected and devalued, Mindful Therapy Group supports healthy conflict and boundary setting. They stand by their employees and don't tolerate verbal abuse directed toward them. They expect a lot from their employees, but they deeply value their self-respect. Overall, Mindful Therapy Group is a company that pushes its employees to grow and sees the cultivation of their employees as part of their overall mission. At times it is difficult, but it is always rewarding, and leaves employees feeling capable and valued.

Cons

Working at Mindful Therapy Group is not for the faint of heart. Being in the business of customer relations is always going to open a person up to people who take out their frustration on an employee. Being an administrator for a mental health organization like this means that conflict is inevitably going to come along, and it's going to be painful. This job has required me to build conflict resolution skills that I didn't have before, and that's not an easy process. This work is also demanding, so a person needs to be driven in order to do well. It requires a commitment to improvement and an ability to roll with the punches when things get difficult. Having the great support that we do at Mindful Therapy Group makes these experiences easier, but it doesn't remove the discomfort that is involved. If someone is ready to fully engage with these things then this can be a great environment to grow professionally and personally.

Pros

I'm currently an administrative assistant working out of our Northgate and Mountlake Terrace locations. I've been here only for about three months, but working here has already been one of the best job experiences I've had. Starting out, there was (and still is) a huge learning curve, and the team here has been nothing but patient, supportive, and helpful towards me during this period. I've described working here as being feeling like I'm in a "safe space," and that's exactly what it is. There is huge opportunity for growth here, both personally and professionally. The management is great and always makes you feel incredibly supported.

Cons

There is a huge learning curve with this job; learning the ins and outs of insurance and everything that goes along with it has been the biggest struggle here. But if you have a desire to learn and can be receptive towards correction, this is no problem. The training staff has always been incredibly gracious towards me, and you're allowed to ask as many questions as you need.
