Pros

Relaxed work environment. There aren't really any strict working hours, as long as you get your work done and deliver. As a research associate, you have lots of flexibility to choose and explore potential research areas. The faculty and staff are very friendly, helpful, and laid back.

Cons

The research really isn't guided. Rarely am I working on a specific project, but rather exploring potential projects. Often, when I've expressed concern about my feelings of lack of accomplishment, I'm told that my job is to be a "free thinker", and that my job performance is satisfactory. Perhaps it is satisfactory, but it is very unfulfilling.

excellent benefits package and great work environment

Cons

The compensation here doesn't compare many other universities or corporations, especially when it comes to level of education and experience, which is frustrating. For me, I have a master's degree and am single and what I am currently making is very difficult to comfortably live off of, despite a lower cost of living in Starkville, MS. I love what I do and who I work with, but I feel I could be doing the same elsewhere - making a salary that I deserve.

Pay, pay, and pay. Peanuts might be better served than the salaries the university pays. Professors and assistants earn 2 to 4 times more than the unclassified professional staff.
