Pros

Molecular Devices is an operating company of Danaher, which is a large conglomerate that owns Danaher Coulter, Leica, and other big life science companies. This gives employees some exposure to sister companies. As of this writing the company is trying to rebrand itself, so there might be some hope for the future. The location in the heart of Silicone Valley is a big plus. This company is primarily medical research instrumentation hardware design and manufacturing company so lots to do if you are an electrical/mechanical/optical engineer.

Cons

Because it is a medium size company part of the large conglomerate (Danaher) there is allot of process, even for creative work like software engineer. This can be seen as a positive for some people though.

Pros

The location in Silicon Valley offers exposure to new technologies and great networking opportunities. The engineering team was competent and dedicated. The atmosphere was relatively low stress for a high tech firm. If you like a highly structured environment with lots of accountability this could be a good place to work.

Cons

MolDev, a Danaher company, is extremely process focused and requires metrics for every activity. These metrics are monitored often on a weekly or daily basis. This necessarily curtails creativity and creates a lot of reporting overhead. It is very short-term focused in its product development and the vast majority of projects are incremental improvements or reverse engineering competitors products. Danaher itself is very risk adverse and stays away from new, unproven technologies or "leading the wave" type products. This is a poor environment for creative scientists and engineers who want to develop exciting new products incorporating the latest and greatest technologies. Danaher also focuses on Process over People and runs Kaizen events to improve process efficiency. One of the drawbacks for employees is that efficiency increases often can be accompanied by employee reductions.

Pros

Challenging work. Mostly excellent and dedicated co-workers inside and outside my group and department. Good products and customers. Reasonable compensation and incentives. Lots of career growth opportunities. Rigorous data driven business metrics (Danaher Business Systems). Demanding work load makes days and weeks fly by.

Cons

Some voids in business knowledge due to lots of turnover. Rigorous data driven business metrics (Danaher Business Systems). Challenging work. Morale is sometimes flat. Sometimes I could argue company too driven by bottom line and not enough by core values (...but it is a publically-traded business).
