Not the best career option for mid to senior level leaders. Look elsewhere.
Pros
If you work at corporate or at a health plan that landed a recent contract, the work is stable. Not many people reach for the stars, so it doesn't take much to set yourself apart if you work hard and meet your performance goals.
Cons
The culture is poor. Since the vast majority of the work comes from government contracts, the culture takes on the feeling of working in a state or federal agency. Not much innovation or drive to improve processes. The status quo is usually good enough. Can be unstable if you work at a health plan. The state contracts typically run for 5 years before a re-bid is required. Leadership team is very clickish. If you are not in the click, you will always be on the outside looking in regarding promotions, high profile projects, etc.
