On multiple occasions I witnessed principals hold employees at all levels back from true growth and opportunity, clearly demonstrating a lack of trust by their actions. More than a few very senior employees who are burned out and not fully contributing. No urgency to address this issue, which negatively impacts other employees. Resistance to modern HR policies and no Human Resource team or manager. Company always "evolving" so no set culture, which is a mixed bag.

Lots of change has taken place since my departure, so will not spend too much on what may now be irrelevant. Not so much a con depending on your goals, but family owned and privately held is a double edged sword: on one hand, freedom to go after many projects and not beholden to holding company...downside is ceiling for growth, but something that may change in future.
