PAY/COMPENSATION
Pay is on the low to average in the industry. Bonuses are low. Even if you put in a lot of hours, volunteered to help on projects and have more skills than your fellow coworkers, the bonus is the same as another person with less experience at the same level/position as you. They do not consider the amount of effort you put into your work. Sometimes when working overtime, managers will not compensate for your time. Also, there are hardly any perks.
DAY-TO-DAY
A lot of staff get pigeonholed doing the same tasks on many different projects even though requesting with the manager to work on different tasks. Also, expect to use your own personal car to travel to job sites even though there are over 20 company cars available in the parking deck. These cars belong to a specific group in the company, who are not willing to share.
THE COMPANY
The company has different departments, Water, Structural, Geotechnical, Tunnel, etc.. They all work independently or sometimes in competition with each other on the same project. This can be a struggle for mid-level to upper management, particularly finding resources to work on your projects. Also, as in other types of companies, there is bias/favoritism. So if you are not favored by your manager, even if you have the skillset to succeed on a project/task, expect to not grow.
