Pros

They did provide me with steady work. And yes, once you know someone, it is easier to be called in for other jobs when yours is complete. I was able to learn so much on my first long term assignment but truthfully, I was lucky to have worked with a mentor that was not involved in the "game". Our group of three, most of the time, were not under the nose of site supervision so we were able to stay away from any drama, gossip, and "politics". For the most part unless it was brought to us during turnarounds through management.

Cons

The cons of Mundy? Mainly, the culture. "You're my buddy and I got your back even if you're not doing the right thing. I got cha." Just isn't right. And it DOES make a difference to other employees. Morale IS affected. Job performance CAN and WILL eventually be affected. Fair compensation and benefits are also an issue. I've had some time away from Mundy now and I can share my last experience with them with as objectivity as possible now. Mundy, as I have seen in so many years with them, tends to go by the "good ol' boy system". A lot of contractor's help out those they know. I don't inherently think this is a bad system IF the friends you give a responsibility to, understand the job, and didn’t perform poorly on their last job! Especially when it comes to management. The last job I was on was the last straw for me to cut ties with Mundy for good. Our site manager, who was loveable as all get out, was incompetent and had such poor people skills, that all our good folks working hard and doing what they had to do to make our group successful were mistreated (not exaggerating). Bullied, belittled, and harassed. And when several of them reported the issues, nothing was done about it. In essence, HR visits to investigate reports, are a farce. I liked our site manager, just not how he treated the group and certain individuals in particular. My opinion, was he thought that to be a good manager, you had to be feared and put on a good show for the customer. Which was odd, they all did a great job anyway, our manager was off site a lot of the time for personal reasons and they always worked hard no matter what. When our area manager approached me, I was asked my opinion and I gave it. The response I got was that our site manager was just doing his job, “babysitting” and those employees probably deserved that treatment. You’re not going to make everyone happy all the time (this is true however). But, I realized, that this was the norm for Mundy. Unless you are part of upper management or in a clique, you are basically not worthy and verbatim, “field trash” as I had once heard. That is not right. They are people with families, values, and value to the companies end goal. I'm not saying this is true for all people who work for Mundy, but I have worked for them across many sites and yes, I saw this so often. Incidentally, the role of the site manager on our job wasn’t just “babysitting”. He was responsible for so much more and I ended up having to cover for him and help him in procedures for dealing with the our role for that job because I had a lot of expereince in it. He had never done it before and he didn’t know what a lot of the equipment was or how to properly handle responsibility for them. I was embarrassed several times when he’d get questioned from the customer and I’d help him after so as not to embarrass him. It ended up being a lot more work and responsibility than I was getting paid for. Those are just examples of why I have a negative view with what could be a great company. Not all managers with Mundy are inexperienced and some have excellent people and management skills! The ones that I've worked with just weren't and their skill was BS'ing their way through it. But I have heard great things about others. Mundy has some really good and experienced people who work for them. Most people can take being harassed or belittled at work. I sure can. Most of my adult life has been in the construction industry. I’ve developed a thick skin. But that doesn’t mean it should be that way for everyone. Some people choose to move on and find a better team, a stronger team, to be a part of. And if more employees start choosing a better team, or more customers start seeing the incompetencies, well, this could be the sad demise of a company I really do sincerely, have a soft spot for.
