Terrible culture - approach with caution

Pros

The skills you learn here will be of interest to other companies

Cons

Lack of fair progression routes - progression is based on whose face best fits, or who is the managers favourite. This is across all business areas. No belief in the change journey they are going through Pay rises are small and after a few years you will be able to demand a much higher salary from another organisation Toxic culture - driving people who have been there a number of years to the point they no longer care. Everyone is out for themselves. Don't trust your manager No flexible working policy - they don't seem to be able to cope with the concept of working from home. The new leadership team they are bringing in don't believe in this. The CFO has stopped anyone who was doing it from doing it any longer The new CEO has bought in lots of consultants, people he has previously worked with, they don't seem to care and are focusing on pushing growth and will probably leave in a couple of years when they have sold everything Escrow believe they are kings and run the business but they are all a bunch of bullies. Assurance are terrible can't sell anything and unable to retain staff their management team all have 1 foot out of the door. Corporate functions such as HR are toxic, unsupportive and seem unable to retain their staff. Finance department are useless and unable to support the business, can't collect old debt and unable to support the sales teams. Marketing don't do anything themselves they outsource everything and can't come up with any good ideas. IT are useless can't add any value. Do not join if you value your wellbeing.

Some serious flaws

Pros

Some genuinely nice people who are really good at their jobs are still dotted around, but unfortunately it’s these people that are leaving the company weekly. Even the useless people tend to be quite friendly. Pay was not terrible, but also nothing to brag about. I don't have much more to list because I worked in one of the corporate functions. There are many more pros if you are in sales compared to the corporate functions (e.g. huge bonuses and incentives).

Cons

NCC under Rob Cotton was a harsh and brutal place that treated its employees like school children (I could fill pages on that topic!). The company is slowly getting better after he's gone, but his 17 year legacy lives on for the time being! If you are considering a job there ask to see the company policies -maternity, sick pay, flexible working etc. Ask about benefits. Ask to meet member of your new team (in confidence) to get their view on what it's really like. Maybe not all are relevant to you, but it will give you an idea of the kind of company you are dealing with. Day to day, it depends a lot on your manager and working for different managers is like working for different companies. Some are great. A lot are awful. There is very little in way of a companywide culture. Given who they are NCC is surprisingly backwards when it comes to modern working (minimal working from home, poor IT systems etc.). A real shock if you coming from a modern flexible company. People working in the corporate functions like I was (legal, HR, marketing, finance) are treated as second class citizens. Corporate functions are just left to rot. Prized above all are the sales staff. Technical staff come in a close but definite second place. Everyone else is expendable or an obstacle. High regard for sales staff is ironic because many are poorly trained, junior and clearly out of their depth leaving other people to do their jobs for them. It can be really depressing at times. No sense of team across the company at all. Sales treat everyone as the enemy. Career development is non-existent, it's all desperate firefighting to support sales. New management has failed to inspire. They are making huge and controversial changes too fast, and the disruption is driving people away. A big deal is made about communication and listening to staff but most agree it's just hot air. Staff turnover is seriously high which is acknowledged by senior management but nothing is really being done about it. Rapid and expensive change seems like a gamble on a desperate attempt to save the company, and people are leaving because they don't believe that gamble will pay off.
