NIC does right by its employees

Pros

I am a long time NIC employee, and there is a reason that I have stayed with the company for so many years: they do right by their employees and customers. NIC faces all the same pressures that other companies face: competition, shareholder expectations, etc. But the leadership consistently prioritizes doing right by their employees and customers over profits. That's why they cover full healthcare for employees and dependents, and invest in training. The CEO values a healthy work/life balance and encourages community service, and he models these values.

Cons

Salaries can be on the lower end. Those of us who get more out of the health insurance don't mind that so much, but that can make it hard to compete with other IT companies. NIC has a great culture, but because states are managed independently, you can have very different experiences depending on the leadership and culture in your state. Career opportunities can be limited if you are not interested in moving or management.

Thank you so much for your feedback! It is encouraging to know that all the things you have highlighted make a difference in your work experience at NIC. The benefit premiums being paid for by the company is the result of the CEO desiring people to be healthy and have all the resources to do so. Work-life balance is not just talk at NC. There is a paradigm shift that happens when you see your executives pack up at 5 pm.The amenities provided are to make your 8 hour stay comfortable and productive. Sorry about your drive, but from what you have said above, I am guessing it is worth it!

Pros

I cant say enough good things about the company. From my experience here i have been able to learn a tremendous amount. They provide the kind of work environment that makes you feel like you can come to anyone for help if needed. That is hard to find anymore it seems like. Management is also very flexible with your home and life schedules and is willing to work around things you have going on outside of work, instead of like most places making you schedule your life around your job.

Cons

Im sure a lot of people say it, but i really cant think of anything that i would consider a con. NIC really does go above and beyond what you would expect from an employer.
