Pros

Good benefits package with health and dental paid 100% for employee and dependents. Time off policy is pretty good, and the portal I worked in provided a work from home day once per week and had a good location in a downtown setting. In general you'll get good experience with software, ecommerce, and IT operations which will help you move on to other more rewarding positions at other companies.

Cons

Not a super innovative company and after awhile the products get kind of boring to work on and maintain. The systems and processes seem overly complicated as many services rely on third party integration or the corporate office which is in Kansas. Because of this the maintenance on products is a nightmare, a constant task, and stifles productivity. If you want to move up the ladder you will almost certainly have to move to another state. Maybe this is a good thing for you, but it was not for me. GM and other directors tended to look the other way or flat out ignore when there was an issue with morale or a problem between employees. This created some pretty toxic situations between tech and non-technical resources. There were even some managers who would disrespect employees to their face and behind their back which did not help with developing a strong culture. Pay is far below market value (20-30%) and for this reason turnover can get high when the economy is strong. Pay raises are very small (2-3%). If you are killing yourself you might get a 5% bump. Bonus structure was really designed for executives. The execs will make 5 figure bonuses while the grunt workers are lucky to get enough to cover a couple grocery store trips. Better than nothing, but come on.

Pros

Ability for lateral movement to other portals (in different states) and advancement in the corporate entity (advancement at most individual state portals is grossly limited by their small/lean size) Very laid paid work atmosphere and the ability to easily communicate with coworkers across the corporate environment Decent health and dental

Cons

Lacking in professional growth opportunities for employees. It is stated that tuition reimbursement exists, but in practice it was basically impossible to get approval for. "Budget constraints" were frequently cited as reason for not being able to offer other opportunities. Bonuses are given annually if the budget permitted, but were doled out by the GM subjectively based upon perception of worth and likeability. There was a significant disconnect between the governing corporate entity and the separately managed state portal, e.g. regarding management, policy & practices, benefits, business acumen, etc. Salary was grossly disproportionate to duties required and responsibilities held without opportunity for renegotiation Local management (NIC is the corporate entity to 30+ portals that are locally run and managed in a contracted state) was abhorrent. GM fostered a hostile working environment by allowing supervision to routinely behave in an aggressive and outright insulting manner to subordinates. Corporate and local portal policies were seldom followed or enforced at the portal level, resulting in deviation from industry best practices and unnecessary risks to portal maintained data and services
