It's Not The Same Company It Used To Be

Pros

The benefits are very good. I believe that the CEO really means it when he says he wants the best he can do for the employees. It's a tough place to be when you have to answer to the stock holders as well as the customers, employees, etc. And as companies grow, they must change.

Cons

I worked there for quite a long time. I can really only speak for one portal, but my view is that NIC and the portals do not promote the right people. The people who do the real work and have the "team" mentality rarely get promoted. I'm sure many in leadership do a great job, but too much emphasis on promotion is "talking the talk" and "looking the look". That "Marketing" mentality doesn't get applications written and it doesn't meet the needs of the customers. It concerns itself with looking good, winning awards, (and I suspect bonuses). And I hate to say it, but those sort of people tend to be "me" people. Since those in leadership often haven't done the "real work", they just don't understand the importance of putting resources into building infrastructure (upgrading applications for example) because those things aren't pretty and shiny. Pet projects that get attention demand the resources. The other truly necessary things are supposed to some how "still get done".

Pros

The people on the ground. They are committed to the clients and to others on their teams. There are some nice side benefits like free snacks/drinks and fun (if not pointless) conferences. We have an immediate impact on users and citizens. Love the rapid development. 10% company paid medical. (Though if you're having surgery, research it first...there are some standard procedures on most plans that NIC's doesn't cover)

Cons

In the last five years, the company has grown quickly. Instead of recognizing that maybe they should step back and see if there is a better way to run the business as they move from a small to mid-size company, the leadership has plowed full steam ahead with old ideas and people (VPs and GMs) who no longer succeed in today's environment. The executive leadership (mostly the COO and the VPs) pushes the divisions to the breaking point. They expect start up growth in a company 20+ years old. They demand employees, especially the developers, to be "innovative" but they must do it on top of keeping all the regular deadlines. In other words, "we demand you take time away from your family to do something that the VP will take credit for if it's a really good idea." The self-funded model as it was initially designed is not working as well as it did. The states recognize how to get around parts of their contracts and NIC doesn't fight back. They always cave.

Lack of leadership

Pros

Folks in the portals doing the daily work are good.

Cons

Corporate "leaders" do not know how to lead. They believe that fear will motivate and foster creativity. There is a reason why the turnover rate is so high.
