Pros

Decent salary for a postdoc, though DC is very expensive. The research is world class and lots of available collaborations. Investigators are mostly fantastic and brilliant. Wonderful seminars by world-class scientists weekly. Lots of opportunities to present your work to the NIH community.

Cons

Very little opportunity to remain beyond your postdoc, which is limited to a 5 year max (this can be a big problem if your project(s) don't go perfectly). Your salary is more or less static for your entire postdoc. Very few opportunities for teaching or grant submissions.

Pros

collaborative, innovative, and inspirational environment. some of the brightest minds in their respective areas work at NIH

Cons

just like any research institute, you need to be motivated and independent. also expect to work outside of normal working hours. your success is mostly dependent on your personal drive
