Pros

Interesting research in the study of rare diseases Productive collaboration among different Institutes and investigators Networking opportunities Multi-cultural environment as many post-doctoral fellows are foreign

Cons

Some post-doctoral fellows, desperate to publish, take credit for your work Having an advanced education may not necessarily advance your career Authorship is sometimes not based on merit, but political favors

Pros

It was a federal job with benefits that most interns anywhere don't have the privilege of receiving like paid holidays and sick days. I learned a lot about the bureaucratic nature of our government. The closeout center dealt with final documents of research grants.

Cons

The job was not at all challenging and could be handled by anyone with a high school diploma. I did not learn anything new at the job except for a basic overview of how the NIH operates. It was terribly boring and most employees were unproductive.
