Vision for US company unclear

Pros

* Intellectually challenging problems at the intersection of software, AI, hardware, mechanical systems. * Talented co-workers, but we lost quite a few over the past few months and may lose more if US office vision doesn't take shape. * Opportunity to capitalize on demand in *China* for electric vehicles. * The US team has accomplished some groundbreaking feats in the autonomous vehicle space.

Cons

The business model of the US company went through at least 3 iterations during the course of 1 year. As a result, many talented colleagues in various departments left because there was never a clear vision to execute on. There is little visibility into the roadmaps of different teams within the US office; silos indeed exist. How can we begin to execute effectively alongside our counterparts in China when we cannot even execute effectively within our own office?

Pros

- Developing world-class technology while working with leading Silicon Valley technology leaders. - Great physical environment with all the "cool" technology tools. - Outstanding funding coupled with exponential growth opportunities.

Cons

- Moving very fast, difficult to assimilate so many new employees from so many different corporate cultures. - Communication with the parent company in China can be very difficult.

Less talk, more action

Pros

Nice office with thoughtful touches, notwithstanding the plumbing issues others have mentioned. They have attracted some very good engineers and developed some valuable if unproven IP. Crucially, Nio was established at the right time and place to catch the global push towards electrification to the great credit of Nio's founders in China.

Cons

Role of the San Jose office is unclear. SJ has groups working on “full stack” car tech from infotainment to autonomy, but hard to see how any is staffed to credibly compete with industry leaders. While upper managers hold generally impressive credentials, few have prior auto industry experience. This would seem to be considered a plus in the “Silicon Valley vs the world” narrative the company is pushing through keynotes and Glassdoor review rebuttals, although central value propositions have yet to progress past PowerPoint. Still, they are eager to cultivate a disruptive image through self promotion. As both a large company and a startup, Nio has somehow inherited the worst qualities of both: groups that seem to prefer to operate anti-synergistically, favoritism, title inflation (in some cases very laughable), entrenched non-contributors, and acutely, a defective company reporting structure in which even decent engineers would struggle to develop a Juicero, let alone a whole car.
