Pros

Free food if it counts

Cons

Way too many politics for a startup. Promotions were favoritism based and mainly for those who can talk. Hard work were never appreciated. All the teams are trying to hide information from each other. No cooperations at all. Every meeting became a blame game. Quite a few teams were hired for no reason, they didn't contribute at all!! Stock options were wasted on early bad hires, lots of good candidates didn't join because of uncompetitive offer.

Pros

Good, free lunches, modern building and work environment, convenient location and healthy investment in general day to day infrastructure that sometimes gets overlooked. Had a pleasant experience working across teams with some very talented individuals. Communications team very talented. The team I was hired into was beyond excellent and I am still great friends with all of them today - an anomaly for this company.

Cons

Politics, politics, and more politics. Many teams have absolutely abysmal leadership which caused employee flight, but those leaders are in turn protected by even less competent upper management. This has led to massive "brain drain" in the company in all but a few departments which do have good, if indirect, leadership. Severe misunderstanding of what it takes to ship a successful car from all of upper management. Very poor internal communications from the top down. Many in upper management didn't even know what my group did because they never paid attention in any of the many meetings where we had to report the status of our projects to them. Toilets that don't flush. Seriously, this is embarrassing to even have to mention here, but the plumbing in the San Jose office is terrible. Good luck finding a bathroom stall that functions post-lunch. In summary: a very typical ex-Cisco CEO running yet another startup into the ground.

We're disappointed to hear your experience at NIO was not positive. In order to accomplish our vision, we’ve hired great talent and grown quickly to bring a vehicle to market. As we’ve rapidly grown, sometimes information doesn’t filter down as quickly as some people need. We pride ourselves on having an open culture that encourages people to come forward with any issues, either through their manager or directly to the CEO. We are an exception in this regard. NIO is taking on one of the most challenging industries in the world and necessitates a level of leadership and communication that is difficult for some to achieve.
