Pros

Nov is a good place but all of the business groups it has have wildly different degrees of quality. -One great thing is NOV and its companies are a safe place to park your career before you retire -The benefits, though not as good as they were 5 years ago, are still decent -Big company with a lot of the small company feel -Some things have been made easier but it’s only because of cost cutting measures

Cons

-You better be happy with where you’re at because you will be there a while. The pro of, no one getting pushed out or people leaving in general, is the stagnant progress your career will go through while in most units -Hopefully you can convince your manager to allow you to be trained because otherwise you will fall behind the curve of what the industry wants for qualified hires and you will get stuck -Pay is below market value for almost every position by almost 25% in some cases -Good luck if you see another job in the company you like, requesting to transfer or even getting more information about it is heavily looked down on and will only hurt your career -You will get new things added to your job title, which expands your work requirement, but you will not be compensated for it -Very clicky, many many good ole friends clubs -Culture is fairly toxic with every talking about leaving for something else. Few actually do it

Pros

Got to work with a lot of great people. Interesting work, industry & products. Austin area is nice, better than Houston where other oilfield jobs are. Opportunities for growth in the past. Culture was good in the past. Said values were quite admirable ("Gung Ho Values") but not lived out, especially at the management level.

Cons

Poor leadership and management at the upper & mid-upper level. Good leaders get frustrated by the poor leadership above them. Communication between leadership and grass-roots is poor - there's some communication, but not what's needed. Direction is not clear, and what direction & strategy is presented doesn't make sense and is poorly explained, no clear tie to work really being done. Pay is below Austin area average. Advancement seems to be based on relationships rather than capability. Employee development is more said than really done - each employee is pretty much on their own for that. Benefits have dwindled over time. Cyclical nature of the oil & gas industry presents challenges and salaries & wages suffer accordingly, such as no raises multiple years in a row, layoffs every few years producing times of under-staffing resulting in over-worked & over-stressed staff and/or low morale, which seems to indicate the inability of upper management to deal with the dips in the industry to properly invest in the future.
