Frustrating

Pros

The company mission is laudable. A non-profit - as publisher of the NEC, the company has a license to print money so not subject to the kinds of financial pressurs of a for-profit enterprise. Good place to be a slacker. Pay is below market but one of the few companies that still offers a defined benefit pension plan (but only about 30% of salary). If you're not ambitious, want to work 9-5 and don't expect to make a lot of money, you might find this a good place to carve a little niche and kick back.

Cons

Very frustrating for anybody with ambition. Very hard to get anything accomplished. A few motivated individuals struggle to get things done with meager support from management. Senior managers devise strategic plans in a vacum and fail to devote necessary resources to strategic initiatives. Much inter-departmental bickering and finger-pointing. Try to get something big done and you will have a target on your back - very stressful. Management lacks the will to set priorities and focus resources. A lot of dead wood in the staff - poorly educated, unskilled, unmotivated staff - very hard to get cooperation. The place clears out at 5pm on the dot. Hard work is not rewarded.
