Pros

NI is a great transition from college into corporate working life. They invest in their employees with training and coaching. It is a comfortable place to work with many avenues for growth. Because of my time at NI, I was positioned well for my next job at a different company. There are many talented people there and I was glad to come across them.

Cons

Salary and benefits have improved but are not competitive. The story NI used to tell new grads was how the upper management took giant pay cuts to keep folks employed through the 2008 recession because the people came first in the company. There was a 100-year plan and it seemed like a great place to spend a good part of your career. Current upper management could not be less in touch with what is happening in the company, from their monthly-changing strategy to the people they have carelessly laid off in the last 2-3 years. Upper management seems to be mostly driven by the investors, which has led to them letting go of top talent across all functions, people I looked up to, sometimes in unprofessional methods. Leadership is inconsistent with what they say and do, and it’s difficult to trust the direction of the company. Growth has been accomplished through price increases in the past 3 years because the strategy trails the pace of the market. I am glad for my time there but fortunate to have moved on before things continue to spiral.

Pros

Excellent training and support systems. FANTASTIC place to start a career. They provide many avenues for advancement or lateral moves within the company. Despite the cons (as there are many) I still don't regret taking a position there right out of college and would still recommend someone to do so. As long as they don't get caught in the company or ELP bubble. Get your experience, look ahead, move up, and then get hired elsewhere!

Cons

Low pay/benefits compared to industry average for job/experience/title. Despite the company beating sales targets and growth year after year, we were continuously passed over for company bonuses. Because they must be 'Cautiously Optimistic' about the future.. Most raises were barely in line with cost of living increase (~3-4%). Most people there 'drink the koolaid' and believe working there is SO much better than anywhere else, because of the 'culture' and how it's worth taking lower pay. But most have never worked anywhere else.. Their benefits are subpar as well. Once I finally decided to leave with my experience, my new job/company brought a 50% increase to my salary with even better benefits. Management.. That can make or break your job. There are some EXCELLENT managers and leaders there, and I was lucky enough to have one for the last couple years. But there are also SO many bad/inept/dumb managers there, that only get promoted by being loyal, vocal, and brown-noising the higher ups. It's astonishing to wonder how certain individuals got to be promoted and are so high up on the chain (to even VP level..) Management itself is a very tightly knit group, and they don't let anyone in unless they are swimming in the koolaid.

Pros

-Trying to fix compensation problems -Reasonable, employee-centered response to pandemic -100 year plan with a long history of solid culture

Cons

Very deep management stack balanced on thin layer of developers. Churn culture has been adopted throughout most of the software org. Devs interview for new or existing jobs roughly annually, often accompanied by layoffs. Skill specialization replaced mostly with plug-n-play dev model, which still seems to be in an experimental phase. Large cap ambitions with small cap execution. If you thrive on chaos and churn, apply within.
