Pros

I was a full time software engineer for more than 6 years. - An incredible mission to empower scientists and engineers and a clear positive impact - A ton of incredibly smart, talented, and kind software engineers, managers, and product owners - Good leadership in software R&D making sensible and clearly communicated decisions - Great code quality due to strong leadership and process - The highest performing engineers are promoted - Almost all engineers have opportunities to do high impact work

Cons

- Pay is not competitive (which is apparently being addressed with layoffs) - Company revenue is not growing fast enough, leading to painful trade offs and a drop in morale

Pros

There is still some interesting work to be done Paychecks continue to clear - I felt the need to put more than one 'Pro'

Cons

10% R&D Layoff. Still below average compensation. Matrix oriented re-org intended to turn everyone into fungible cogs - no matter how leadership tries to sell this, it is not a good thing for the average IC. Loss of any culture that made the company attractive. This is an R&D company that thought it was important to create a position for a SVP CMO solely focused on outbound yet we still don't have a CTO! There is no technical/R&D representation in senior leadership at all! Also, the 'Architectures and Technologies' team is generally seen as a joke by most of R&D, with little to no significant achievements in the last decade and several notable flops. Very dysfunctional inbound marketing which is being rectified by putting more and more eggs in fewer and fewer baskets by giving up on multiple product lines and focusing on a few growth opportunities which tend to be very cyclical
