Pros

Dream job of preserving and maintaining unique facilities and lands in majestic environments. Maintaining areas that will inspire generations of visitors. Being able to make a difference one work order, project, or visitor experience at a time. Potential for an entire career of extreme job satisfaction.

Cons

Declining annual budgets below required levels to maintain facilities, operations, and programs. Unrealistic workload and expectations from non-facilities employees. Minimal interest across parks in teamwork and collaboration. Lackadaisical zero-consequence responses from Management for allowing unprofessional toxic employee behavior.

Pros

Awesome passionate coworkers, beautiful fieldwork locations, and interesting projects! Seasonal positions are a great way to see the country and acquire useful and relevant experience. All parks that I've worked at have been welcoming, with a culture that values individual wellness and work-life balance.

Cons

The endless seasonal grind requiring a new job/move every six months (or less) can get old quick. It's very difficult to get a foot in the door to more permanent positions and it can become discouraging. Seasonal benefits aren't as good as those permanent employees receive (although better than non-fed seasonal positions I've had).

Pros

It really is a beautiful place to work

Cons

Virtually impossible to get a permanent position; poor communication between supervisors and field rangers; superintendents have a god complex. We recently had one of the chief interp rangers come to our location and immediately complained about how stained the carpet was. We were told we had to stay longer to clean - we don't even have access to carpet cleaning paraphernalia in our district (aside from a crappy vacuum that does not really work).
