Pros

Some of the most beautiful places in the country. A fairly secure government job, pretty good benefits, an average pension.

Cons

All the frustrations of federal bureaucracy, low pay, remote locations, small, petty, short sighted managers. Inter-divisional conflicts with lack of resolution.

Pros

In general I feel the work environment is positive; the employees and supervisors usually care about what they do very much. That passion is what drives many employees, including myself, to really try to excel at their jobs. My job was a mix of field and office work.

Cons

The hiring process is onerous. I applied for 20 government jobs, all of which I was well-qualified for, before getting this one. There seem to be a lot of directives from higher-up in the NPS from people that clearly don't have knowledge of what happens on the ground. Also, the higher one advances in their career, the more administrative their job becomes. I think this results in many people becoming burned-out over time.

Pros

Can have a front row seat to historic events. Meet interesting people from across the globe. Work in both inner city and wooded environments. Decent pay. Some decent people to work with.

Cons

Less than knowledgeable people get promoted...and promoted again....and promoted yet again.... Under funded and under staffed. You have to watch your pay...they have been known to violate laws resulting in HUNDREDS of employees filing class action matters. Management will fight even when they know they are wrong to try to bankrupt employees via legal fees. Horrible work/life balance unless you are one of the "good ol' boys". Not unusual for violations of FMLA, EEO, USERRA. Successful senior employees not valued and tend to leave as soon as eligible. Arrests for off-duty acts generally have no bearing on job assignments or promotions.
