Toxic culture. Covert racism. A lot of people leave because upper management refuse to address issues of systemic racism and unconscious bias.

Pros

The benefits are the only good thing about NWF

Cons

The pay is horrible, and they talk the talk about work/life balance, but it's not real life. They close the organization over the holidays, but if you're drowning in work and have to work every day anyway, then the closing isn't helpful. Also, the HR department claims that if you go to them, you will not suffer retaliation but don't believe it. The senior staff don't seem to have a clue as to what is going on for the worker bee staff members

Pros

Benefits are fantastic, especially half-day Fridays. Great work-life balance, and options to work remote, hybrid, or in-person. The organization is filled with really incredible, intelligent, hard-working people who believe in the org’s mission and want to do good work. The org overall has a meaningful mission and values.

Cons

The org is bogged down in bureaucracy, often talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk. There is a lack of direction and no upward mobility for the policy specialist positions. Promotions are elusive and seem highly dependent on favorites/who your supervisor is. Pay is abysmally low and does not keep up with inflation or cost-of-living, especially if you reside in a big city.
