Pros

Nationwide is a fortune 100 company, and is diversified between both the P&C and Life (Nationwide Financial) side of the business. Nationwide understands it's position in the marketplace, and is working to change deficiencies within the culture, systems, and people, etc. The environment is constantly changing at Nationwide. Pay is fair, work / life balance is respected for the most part, and Columbus is a great place to live.

Cons

The constant change includes a turnstyle at the senior management level. There appears to be very disconnected views on short and long term strategy for the business and operations. This change and churn at the management level and associated direction creates a very political environment to work in. Often you are expected to choose a "camp", and really tie your career to the political battles of a few. Nationwide of late has experienced some really bad times (though to be fair, most financial services companies have as well). The outcome of this has been a directive to reduce FTE, and employee know it, creating very poor moral. Many Jobs are being cut in the fall of 2008 and are expected to continue into 2009. Unfortunantly, not a real positive environment right now.

Pros

This used to be an excellent company to work for. I have been given some wonderful opportunities that I would not have been given at any other company. But, Nationwide has changed. Communication to the field is a joke, customer service has suffered and senior management has seemingly disappeared.

Cons

I don't have an idea of where the company is going. I am expected to have a 5 year plan. Nationwide seems to always be in chaos.

Pros

The large organization presents opportunities for advancement, and there are many training options available. The compensation is competitive, including a pension plan in addition to a 401k. Bonuses are also available, thought they are very dependent on overall company profits, and profits can be greatly affected by events outside the control of the company and its employees, such as natural disasters that require large cash payouts by the company. The working environments are generally good, with current equipment and tools, and offices well-maintained. The top management does a good job of communicating company goals and results, but upper management within each organization does not do as good a job.

Cons

There seems to be constant "right-sizing" that causes uncertainty by employees about the stability of their job. There are significant pressures to deliver within sometimes arbitrary target dates, and to work overtime to meet expectations. At the same time, the message from management is to support work/life balance. Each of the companies within the larger organization suffer cutbacks independently of other companies, so you may work in a company that is struggling and being part of a larger, succesful organization may not save your job. Within the IT organization, there seems to be a bit of age bias toward younger talent, so if you are over 50, opportunities are not as abundant.
