Pros

The Shipyard is a pretty easy place to get into so long as you have above a 3.0 GPA out of college. Depending on what department you work in, you will never work overtime, unless you want to. But you can usually work as much overtime as you want.

Cons

Work is pretty boring. You aren't doing much/any design work. It's all just writing technical documents which direct trade personnel how to do a job. However, most of the work has been done a hundred times before, so there's a lot of just copy/pasting.

Pros

Job security and high salary (for engineers). Large Scale programs and projects. Good location next to URBN Outfitters; You'll work next door to models and hipsters. You don't have to invent anything, you just need to figure out how to apply new technology to old problems. Management appreciates hard workers.

Cons

Tools and software are old and full of glitches. Facilities are showing their age. Lots of overhead on productivity. Resources are scarce. Every single thing takes far longer than in the private sector. "Government employee" mentalities can be cancerous.

Pros

Seacoast New Hampshire and Maine are awesome areas to live. Work life balance is pretty great. Overtime is time and a half and is readily available for most employees with at least a year and a half experience. Leave time counts toward 40 hour week so you can get overtime even if you take a day off during the week.

Cons

Bureaucracy is overbearing. Promotion system based entirely on manager subjectivity. Some managers are easy and some are difficult to get promoted by. No flex-time so almost everyone comes in at exact same time through two tiny gates. Traffic is miserable.
