I got treated as if I was in the military and the pay was extremely low, not liveable wages.
Pros
You get the same price on goods that the military does (without tax) and you can use military and manufacturers coupons together. Also, you can price match anything as long as its the same model/make/item. You can get the item for a cheaper price and not pay tax on top of that.
Cons
They never acknowledged break times. If you did not go at your time (due to heavy workload), then some managers did not care or reschedule you for your break and you simply "missed out" because you were too busy . Another thing is you have to have scheduled breaks. The pay is extremely low. They start at minimum wage. I got paid $7.50. A supervisor gets paid approx. one dollar more than that and have to assume much responsibility. So it is not even worth it to move up. The reason they pay low is probably because most people that work there are military dependents and/or disabled. They feel dependents already have someone making a steady paycheck and they have benefits. What the NEX does is hire you as a "flexible" employee where you work as much as a full time employee and no benefits. Some employees have been flexible for 9 years! These are mainly the disabled/elderly employees that the NEX seems to take advantage of for sure. It is not considered part of the government and they pay almost as much as a non-profit would. It is part of the MWR so the funds are circulated back into the navy for the sailors wellness and recreational purposes. However, they do not take into account that many that work there are military family and very low pay, long hours, no breaks, poor management do not add to the welfare of the military.
