Take the Cash, Leave the Stock

Pros

You'll get incentive stock options as part of your compensation package. See Cons section.

Cons

If you receive a job offer with equity, ask the recruiter about the stock options, specifically if you can sell your vested and exercised shares on the secondary market. You'll realize your shares are worthless because Neo4j prevents you from selling them on the secondary market, meaning the only way you'll ever realize any value from them is if the company is acquired or goes public (laugh). See, the company was very sneaky about changing this rule a few years back, and many of us with vested options are now holding worthless paper. What was sneaky is that the change wasn't communicated to employees but slowly emerged as some employees tried to sell their shares and were surprised to find they couldn't. So if the recruiter offers you stock, tell them you'll pass and want more cash instead.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I would encourage you to reach out to a member of the People team who can talk through this with you in more detail. Our equity plan is competitive and consistent with how most private companies handle stock options at our stage as a company. - Global People Team

Pros

Working leading & bleeding edge tech….great benefits, and even greater people. Low & mid level managers are great, CXO level approachable, transparent and honestly care…great company culture and field management cultivating teaming on complex tasks. Job security way better than expected from startup. Not any more remote than most tech and non tech companies these days that don’t have $$$$$ leases in SFO and NYC…..75% of customers are remote as well. You learn more data science than you ever thought you would and a ton of tech that seems rapidly evolving every 2 years these days…..so if looking for commodity RDBMS and large office with onsite amenities …not the place for you. If you want your brain to be challenged to point of overload & working with great colleagues…this is the place.

Cons

Usual growing pains of a startup transitioning towards self sustaining/growth model…not really a negative. Biggest negative in my mind is marketing (lacks technical, competitive and industry verticals…almost no focus outside FSI and fraud)….effectively you are on your own as seems they are relying heavily on grassroots single developers vs enabling enterprise knowledge about tech/positioning. Sales training extremely repetitive, very high level vs helping move the ball forward. Net: you need to not only self starter but also self enabler…..not sure really a negative given company size….but it does slow company growth.

Pros

Company is undergoing change, but it is all for the better as company position themselves for march to $500M to$1B in revenue. Old start up management team was largely moved out and replaced. CEO and founder is very good and visable.

Cons

New CRO management team still trying to prove themselves. A lot of change in the U.S. management ranks.
