Pros

Peerless ability to tackle greenfield technologies. Free snacks and drinks.

Cons

Excellent people are leaving because of culture clashes between Portland and SF while pay is too low and very stingy with stock options. Pay in Portland still does not meet the cost of living. Lots of nepotism--friends of execs who are in critical roles with no experience or individuals specifically selected by execs who have been fast tracked but provide no real value. This results in poor leadership who were promoted internally with no experience just to satisfy a C-Level desire for "diversity". There are some brights spots in the company. However, engineering is rampant with inexperienced tactless leadership and support is ruled by perception and politics. At New Relic, it's not what you do or accomplish, it's how did it appear to everyone else. Favoritism is rampant as everyone competes to be voted the most helpful person in the company, instead of doing their jobs.

Pros

The sheer level of talent among a very eclectic group of individuals with a unified vision is intoxicating. The day-to-day life, the pay, the benefits; all of the things that are generally sought after, have all their boxes ticked. At the very least, competitive wages and benefits for similar work. From the Portland location, the office is very welcoming and a bit of nerd-vana. Office/meeting spaces are all open and glass with etched designs from nerd pop culture. Having the ability to present yourself as your true self, is unique in a corporate setting. Casual life and serious work seems fitting. Everyone expects a high level of performance from all involved while maintaining a level of casual yet professional communication while also maintaining authenticity. People are encouraged to learn and grow and are promoted within frequently and rapidly, but perhaps not as often as some may prefer. This place is just damned cool. To say almost nothing of the products - they are awesome. The tech is cool and the teams working behind the scenes care tremendously for the experiences their users have. Despite frequent changes of tide (as it happens when companies go public) this is absolutely the best support environment I've experienced.

Cons

The largest cons seem to be related to sales and growing pains of going from a startup to a publicly traded company. There is more "corporatization" since becoming public. Sales teams/reps seem to have a tough time which bleeds into the rest of the organization. The ability to communicate between departments has become tougher in Portland since splitting support from the rest of the office and putting a larger emphasis on being a big corporate enterprise.
