Pros

You won't have to take your work home with you. You get to work with the public and help people find information. If you get assigned to a decent branch, you may be involved in some interesting programs, but many branches seem stagnant.

Cons

It's like working for DMV. Many of the senior staff have been there for 15 years or more and the sense of burn-out is palpable. People are promoted based on longevity rather than merit. While many public libraries have been invigorated by the role of technology in information seeking, NYPL feels bogged down by bureaucracy and overwhelmed by a changing society.

Pros

Its prestigious to say that you have worked for the New York Public Library, only a thirty five hour work week, many branches so it is easy to find a better fit, good benefits, there are a lot of different types of training that is offered, part of an union

Cons

the salary is low compared to other big city libraries, there have been a lot of changes recently without a lot of informing the staff, positions are being eliminated or changed, managers are being forced to reapply for their jobs, some librarys are not located in the best areas, having to work Saturdays and nights,

Pros

There are many location through out bronx, manhattan and Staten Island (but dont think you can easily move through out these branches). Working at some of these branch can offer low stress position.

Cons

Downsides of working at the new york public library includes low pay and heavy beuracracy. Unless you are LeClerc, staff at all level are pretty much paid below industry standard. There is also far much beuracracy to complete any task efficiently. Some managers go on power trips, over what is really, not that stressful a job. Some managers are the reason why there is any stress at all in some branches.
